Cycling team picked for Island Games

Bermuda Bicycle Association (BBA) have announced the eight riders to represent the Island in the road cycling events at the NatWest Island Games. With the teams restricted to a maximum of five men and three women by the Island Games Association rules, the BBA’s selectors chose from six women and 15 men candidates. The men’s team will be comprised of Geri Mewett, Dominique Mayho, Shannon Lawrence, Johan Vivier and Darren Glasford, while the women’s team is made up of Nicole Mitchel, Karen Bordage and Earlena Ingham.“The team will be competitive in a sport known to be of the highest quality at the Games and it will be interesting to see how it works out,” said BBA president Peter Dunne.“With Dominique and the rest of the men’s team hitting their peak just in time, and with the ladies finding form as well, it looks set to be a great competition.”Dunne added: “We feel that we have assembled a team that is going to represent us well this July.“Nicole Mitchell will probably have a shot at medalling and as a team the women should be contenders in either the road race team or time trial.“In the men's events I think we’re going to look to Geri Mewett in the criterium and Dominique Mayho in the road race.“We are just beginning to get some idea of who will be coming from each country so we can get a better picture of the field.“The time trial will be interesting as the word is that all five of the riders from Isle of Man are consistently riding faster than our guys, but the weather here is just a little different from the Irish Sea.“As things continue to warm up in Bermuda our athletes will be better prepared to handle the heat and humidity.”All competitors will participate in the three road race events; a road race on Sunday, July 14, a time trial on Tuesday, July 16 and the finale will be a criterium in Hamilton on the evening of Thursday, July 18.The road team joins the previously announced mountain biking squad of five men. There will be no mountain biking events for women at the Games.CyclingMen: Geri Mewett, Dominique Mayho, Shannon Lawrence, Johan Vivier, Darren GlasfordWomen: Nicole Mitchell, Karen Bordage, Earlena Ingham,Mountain Biking: Mark Hatherly, Chequan Richardson, Deshi Smith, Brian Steinhoff, Phil Trussell
