Shannon Lawrence overcame a three-second deficit to claim the Butterfield Bermuda Grand Prix Male A title in Hamilton yesterday.

Lawrence, chasing Mark Hatherley who won the time-trial in St George’s on Friday and Saturday’s circuit race in Southside, pulled away from his rivals midway through yesterday’s criterium and never looked back, beating Hatherley by two laps in a a time of 59min 53sec.

Lawrence finished the time-trial in 51 seconds and circuit race in 1hr 44min 6.4sec, which gave him an overall time of 2:44:39.

Hatherley, who won the time-trial in 48 seconds and the circuit race in 1:44:06.2, could not protect his slim lead but managed to hold on to second place.

He finished the criterium in 1:02:15 to give him a total time of 2:47:00.

Mathew Ackland, who was eight seconds behind Hatherley finished third in 2:47:08.

“It was tough going out there, Mark is not one to give up easy,” Lawrence said.

“I knew I had to use every tactic possible in not only getting the win but also overcoming the gap that was between us heading into the racing. The first two days were pretty good, in my opinion, and the conditions made it good to be out there.

“On Saturday, we were all pretty tight together and Mark got the win by a hair, so I needed to come out and go after the win and not allow myself to get caught up in trying to chase anyone down.”

Nicole Mitchell completed a clean sweep as she brushed aside her competitors in a dominating fashion on her way to claiming the Female Open. Mitchell, who has been competing overseas in recent months, held a 28-second lead over April Galda Joyce heading into the criterium.

She finished the time-trial in 59 seconds, the circuit race in 1:02:55 and the criterium in 31:20 for a combined time of 1:35:04.

“I am really happy with my overall results this weekend,” Mitchell said. “I was able to continue to grow my lead in the overall competition on each successive day of racing.

“Having been overseas for the last two months racing, it was a good test to see where my fitness is at the moment and in my build-up for the Commonwealth Games.

“Women’s racing has come a long way since I started racing and it was great to see both the number of women racing as well as the level locally.”

Galda Joyce finished second overall in 1:36:47 while Gabriella Arnold, a National Junior Athlete Sponsorship Programme awardee, claimed the final podium spot in a time of 1:38:22.

Dennis Joell won the Male B division by three seconds ahead of Anthony Smith. Joell had an overall time of 2:04:19, with Smith finishing in 2:04:22, in the time-trial, which proved to be the difference between the two riders. Howard Williams came third in 2:04:23.

Matthew Oliveira won the Male 13-16 honours in a time of 1:37:14 for the second successive year. Christian Oatley, in a time of 1:37:41, was second, while Rajul Matthie-Shakir was third in 1:37:55.

In the Female 13-16 age group, Victoria Davis, 1:17:26, beat Tristan Narraway, 1:17:55, for the second year running. Rebecca Harrison was third in 1:28:15.

Peter Dunne, the Bermuda Bicycle Association president, was delighted with the three days of racing.

“What a great Bermuda weekend for cycling,” Dunne said. “The weather was spectacular and it made today’s race in Hamilton a very fast one. Shannon really turned in a great performance today, getting a gap on a small group of leaders and then just riding away from everyone.

“In the A race today, the battle was for second and Mark Hatherley worked hard to get the silver spot.

“Thanks go to title sponsor Butterfield Bank, the race directors, officials, volunteers and host venues for an enjoyable three days of racing.”
