Presidents Cup goes to Mayho

Dominique Mayho won his fourth President's Cup title in five years yesterday when he led home the field in the gruelling 62-mile race in a time of 2hr 33min 55sec.

Mayho, who won in 2014, 2015 and 2016, took line honours, with Conor White of Winners Edge just four seconds behind him 2:33:59. Mayho was representing VT Construction/Madison.

There was a three-minute wait for the next riders to arrive at the finish line on Harbour Road, with Darren Glasford finishing third in 2:37:01 and Winners Edge team-mate Alexander Miller, aged 15, fourth in 2:37:02. He was in a sprint finish with Alan Mooney of Team Tokyo, who also clocked 2:37:02 to round out the top five finishers.

Caitlin Conyers of Bicycle Works was the first female and sixth overall in 2:37:06, with Cora Lee Starzomski and Ashley Couper completing the women's podium. Miller won the top Junior Male award, with Ziani Burgesson and Nazarai Fox in second and third for the category.

There was a crash in the peloton near Belmont Ferry on Harbour Road that slowed a pack of approximately 20 riders, several of whom went down. One required medical treatment at the hospital but the others were able to finish, albeit in a scattered formation.

The race started at Lindo's Family Foods in Warwick and took the riders to both ends of the island before finishing back on Harbour Road, with Mayho reclaiming the title he lost to Matthew Oliveira last year. Oliveira, a college student in Britain, was not able to return to defend his title this year.
