Kaden Hopkins finished tenth in the opening stage of the Tour of Greece on Wednesday.

Hopkins was one of the more aggressive riders on the 171.6km stage, which took place between the towns of Ioannina and Agrinio in central Greece.

Competing for team Atom 6 Bikes in a tour featuring 20 teams and 118 starters, Hopkins was involved the stage’s longest breakaway, leading the field for almost 50km before the break was hauled back by the peloton.

Despite those exertions, Hopkins was involved in the sprint finish and crossed the line in tenth position, completing the stage in 3hrs 26min 56sec, and finishing in the highest position for his team.

The stage was won in the same time by Mathis Avondts, of Belgium, who races for Azerion/Villa Valkenburg.

Hopkins was also one of just 14 riders to pick up points in the green jersey classification, while his team sit second in that competition.
