Bermuda’s Kaden Hopkins and Nic Narraway finished 40th and 46th respectively in the Elite Men’s Individual Time Trial on the opening day of the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal.

The two Bermudians raced against Olympic champions, former world champions and leading professional riders in a field of 60 starters representing 39 nations.

Hopkins completed the 39.2-kilometre course in 49min, 40.64sec to finish 40th, recording an average speed of 47.35 kilometres per hour.

Narraway finished 46th in 51:10.21 seconds, averaging 45.96kph in his first World Championship time trial at Elite level.

The Montreal course combined long, fast sections with technical turns, changes in rhythm and a demanding uphill run to the finish. Both Bermuda riders paced their efforts consistently. Hopkins held 40th position at each of the three intermediate checkpoints and through to the finish. Narraway was 45th at every intermediate checkpoint before completing the event in 46th.

Both riders arrived at the Championships following challenging preparations.

Hopkins returned to international competition just weeks after surgery for a refractured collarbone. He sustained the injury in a crash during the Stage eight time-trial at the Tour Cycliste International de la Guadeloupe. Despite the crash, he remounted on a spare bike and finished the stage in second place. The injury was a refracture of the same collarbone he had initially broken in February.

Narraway’s preparation was disrupted by an accident that required facial stitches and left his personal time-trial bike unfit for competition. With less than a month before the World Championships, he had to order parts and build his position on a replacement time-trial bike provided by his team, Competitive Edge Racing.

Their performances placed Bermuda 40th and 46th in a World Championship race won by Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel. The Olympic champion completed the course in 44:53.13, averaging 52.4 kilometres per hour to claim a record fourth consecutive world time-trial title. Italy’s Filippo Ganna finished second, with France’s Paul Seixas taking third.

For Bermuda, an island of just 21 square miles, having two riders compete together in an Elite World Championship event represents a significant achievement and reflects the continued development of Bermudian cycling on the international stage.

Hopkins and Narraway were supported on the trip by team manager Peter Dunne, mechanic Dominique Mayho and everyone who helped the riders reach the start line in Montreal.
