Kaden Hopkins ensured that Bermuda’s pink jersey was featured heavily on the biggest cycling stage of all at the UCI World Championships on Sunday.

Hopkins made it into an early breakaway of 16 riders in the 273.5 kilometre Road Race and held his own with some of the planet’s best riders for more than two hours around the streets of Montreal.

Hopkins was dropped from the break after 140km of hard work and then had to call upon all his reserves to hang for as long as possible with the chasing pack.

However, race organisers pulled out riders who had been distanced from the main pack, with Hopkins withdrawn from the field on lap seven of the 13-lap race.

Nicholas Narraway was also in the field, making it through four of the 13 laps before he was taken out of the race.

Just 58 of more than 200 starters finished the race, which was won by Brandon McNulty, who became the first American winner of the men’s road race world title in 33 years with a stunning victory.

“Until the last 800m I didn't believe, I was so tired,” said McNulty, who was emulating Lance Armstrong, The last American winner of the race in 1993.

“I'm at a loss for words. I knew something could happen but it would take a miracle and I guess today a miracle happened”.
