A senior citizen is in hospital after a crash in Paget on Saturday, police said yesterday.

A spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service said a taxi driver was travelling east on Harbour Road when he lost control of the vehicle and went through a wall near Lower Ferry shortly after 3.45pm.

The taxi landed on its roof and became partially submerged in Hamilton Harbour.

The driver, understood to be a 74-year-old man, escaped from the vehicle and was able to extract the three other occupants with help from the public.

One of the passengers, an 86-year-old woman, was unresponsive after the crash but regained consciousness before being taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital with the other occupants, who were understood to have been treated and discharged.

The police spokesman added: “The 86-year-old woman was placed on a ward as a precautionary measure and continues to receive treatment for her injuries, which are understood to be non-life threatening.

“Harbour Road remained closed in the area of the collision for approximately three hours, while the vehicle was removed from the water and the roadway cleared.”

Police thanked the public for their patience and co-operation during the closure and urged witnesses who had not already spoken to officers to call Pc Steven Paynter at 717-0951 or e-mail spaynter@bps.bm.
