Drivers were urged to ease up on their speed after Bermuda Police Service patrol officers, working with reserve police, issued 83 traffic tickets on Saturday, with 74 for speeding — the highest at 86 kilometres per hour.

Between 7am and 1pm, officers handed out two tickets each for the offences of no driver’s licence, no third-party insurance, unlicensed vehicle and use of a handheld device. One driver was ticketed for failure to maintain tyres.

It came after 131 tickets were issued over the previous 24 hours of Friday, with 114 for speeding and a top recorded speed of 96km/h.

There were an additional eight tickets for unlicensed or uninsured motor vehicles, four for having no driver’s licence, two for no third-party insurance and another single ticket for failure to maintain tyres.

A spokesman said there were also four arrests: two on suspicion of impaired driving, and two for outstanding warrants.

Over the entire weekend, 23 people were arrested for various offences, including seven on suspicion of impaired driving.

He said heightened, visible police patrols were scheduled to continue at locations around the island.

Drivers were urged to use the roads “safely and responsibly”, with particular caution in areas with roadwork and roadside tree trimming.
