Death toll for 2026 up to 15 after Somerset Bridge crash
Police have confirmed that a 30-year-old male died as a result of a three-vehicle crash that took place in the early hours of Saturday.
The man’s death marks the fifteenth road fatality of 2026.
In addition, a 22-year-old man remains in hospital with serious injuries and a 29-year-old man was discharged from hospital after receiving treatment.
Police said that the collision occurred on Middle Road in Sandys, near Bridge Lane at about 4am.
A spokesman for the Bermuda Police Service said: “Sadly, the Bermuda Police Service can now confirm Bermuda’s fifteenth road fatality of 2026.
“A 30-year-old male motorcyclist was seriously hurt after a collision involving two other motorcyclists around 4am Saturday, October 17, along Middle Road, Sandys Parish, near Somerset Bridge.
“Apparently two of the riders were travelling east on Middle Road, while the other rider was travelling west on Middle Road, at that time.
“Police, Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service, as well as ambulance personnel responded.
“Despite life-saving efforts at the scene and being rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, the 30-year-old man was later pronounced dead at the hospital.”
A BPS family liaison officer is assisting the deceased’s next of kin.
Policing was ramped up over the weekend. The Bermuda Police Service posted on its social-media page last night there had been five arrests during Sunday’s day shift ― four individuals arrested on outstanding warrants and one in connection with a stolen vehicle.
The statement said: “If you’re carrying weapons, wanted on outstanding warrants or breaking the law, this message is for you.
“In addition to regular patrols, several specialised units will be deployed throughout tonight and into tomorrow, conducting Section 315F checkpoints and other traffic enforcement initiatives.
“Our presence will be felt, our enforcement efforts will continue and our commitment remains the same.”
No traffic was allowed across Somerset Bridge for approximately three hours while the collision scene was processed.
Traffic restrictions were put in place after the collision, but Somerset Bridge was reopened later in the morning.
The investigation continues regarding the serious incident and any witnesses are urged to call Constable Asaph Rawlins on 247-1788, 717-2123 or e-mail arawlins@bps.bm.
