More than 250 men visited Elliott Primary to take part in an initiative helping children learn to read.Cabinet Ministers Zane DeSilva, Glenn Blakeney and Michael Weeks, and Government MP Dale Butler, were among those who called at the school for the mentoring programme last Friday. The school’s educational therapist Dawn Burgess said the idea was to show students reading is something men do as well as women.Ms Burgess told The Royal Gazette: “Our literacy coach Pauletta Francis wanted to let the community know how important reading is. You have to ask yourself, what can you do without being able to read?“Sometimes we can think a lot of guys just read the sports pages, but we wanted to show the students that men read too. A lot of kids here in Bermuda are more influenced by females, so we thought this would be a useful exercise.“The day went really well and the children had lots of fun.”
