Schoolchildren showcased their science skills at a science and technology Olympics at the weekend.

Charlene White, a teacher at Mount Saint Agnes Academy, which hosted the event, said the science, technology, engineering, art and maths event was a huge success.

She added: “Everything went really well. Even though it is a fun competition, it can get a bit heated at the end.

“This year we had a good group of entries from both public and private schools, and it was nice to see the results spread out among the schools.”

Ms White added: “This is an event which is important because it helps to get people interested in the sciences.

“I think it's also great to have the interaction between students from different schools because you don't often get that.”

The Somebodies, a team from Mount Saint Agnes, won the top prize in Division 1, open to pupils born between 2008 and 2010. Second and third place in the division was claimed by teams from Saltus Grammar School — the Saltus Knights and the Super Saltus Scientists.

The Elliot Eagles from Devonshire's Elliot Primary School earned an honourable mention.

The Saltus Knights proved victorious in Division 2, set up for pupils born between 2006 and 2008.

The Trumpetfish, a team from the Bermuda Zoological Society's Science Club, claimed second place in the division and the MSA Saints came third.

Teams were also challenged this year to create an art display to showcase their pre-build process.

Somerset Primary's Busy Bees and The Trumpetfish from the BZS Science Club won the top prizes for their respective divisions.

Competitors at the Saturday event tackled a variety of challenges, including making a balloon-powered vehicle and building a mousetrap car.
