Latest journal of archaeology and maritime history on sale

People can learn more about a former governor, how the island’s name was used during the 17th century and the American Revolutionary War by reading the National Museum of Bermuda’s newest publication.

The museum has released the 22nd Bermuda Journal of Archaeology and Maritime History, which is now available for purchase.

Debuting in 1989 as a successor to the Bermuda Historical Quarterly, the journal contains articles about the island’s history and archaeology.

Topics in previous editions included slavery, military history, whaling and agriculture.

Archaeologist Deborah Atwood, the journal’s co-editor and curator at the NMB, said the newest edition gives readers “a captivating blend of archaeological and historical research that delves deep into Bermuda history”.

She added: “By collaborating with researchers around the world, facilitating access to the museum’s collections and providing multiple platforms for sharing new research, NMB generates and shares new knowledge, which can challenge existing paradigms and contribute to the ever-evolving narrative of Bermuda’s history.”

Researchers from around the world oversee the contents of the Bermuda Journal of Archaeology and Maritime History through an advisory board.

An NMB spokeswoman said: “The board provides guidance on the direction and scope of BJAMH, as well as reviewing submitted papers for publication.

“Through this rigorous peer-review process, the board ensures that all articles exemplify the highest research standards.

“Volume 22 is the first edition to undergo this review process under the advisory board’s auspices.”

Members of this board include Jon Adams, from the University of Southampton, Marley Brown, from the College of William and Mary, Allisandra Cummings, from the Barbados Museum and Historical Society, and Walter Roban, the Deputy Premier and Minister of Home Affairs.

The spokeswoman thanked the British and US supporters of the National Museum of Bermuda for making this publication possible.

Every edition of the journal can be purchased or downloaded by visiting NMB’s website.
