A charity is seeing an increased need for donated school uniforms within the community.

Gina Spence, founder and chief executive of Gina Spence Productions, said so many people had simultaneously registered for the organisation’s Each One, Reach One programme this year, the website crashed.

Each One, Reach One, which was founded in 2008, provides school uniforms and supplies to students and families on the island.

Ms Spence said: “We know the need is great but this is evidence of how great the need is this year for struggling families.

“We make an appeal to our community to make a donation of any kind to donate gently used items to help us provide over 800 children with school uniforms.”

So far this year, almost $30,000 has been raised since the appeal officially opened earlier this month but the goal is $75,000.

Gibbons Company partners with the charity for this campaign every year.

Tony Thompson, Gibbons Company’s chief executive officer, said it had received many clothing and monetary donations so far.

He explained: “These will go a long way to ensure every child gets what they need to start the school year.”

People who drop off clothing at Gibbons Company’s children’s department on Church Street before Wednesday will receive a $10 cash coupon for every $50 spent at the store.

People can also sponsor a child’s first-day starter kit for $200. The pack includes shirts, bottoms, underwear, socks and a back pack.

Mr Thompson continued: “Investing in our youth is a truly worthy endeavour and we hope the entire community can take part in this event.”

People can donate clothing and funds to the initiative until Friday and items will be distributed at CedarBridge Academy the next day.
