Young people invited to Youth Awards for chance to get $1,000

Iconic call: the Martin Luther King/Progressive Group Youth Awards will take place in the Athene Lecture Theatre at Bermuda College, Paget, on Saturday, May 9, 2026, between 5.30pm and 7pm, with the meet and greet at 5pm

An inaugural ceremony tomorrow will give young people the chance to discuss social change and see what they can do to help.

The first Martin Luther King and Progressive Group Youth Awards will feature a panel of young adults to reflect on the impact of the eponymous activists.

Glenn Fubler, of Imagine Bermuda, said attendees would get a chance to meet members of the Progressive Group, who successfully fought for the end of segregation on the island.

He added they could participate in four $1,000 draws to go towards their higher education.

The event comes courtesy of the Department of Education and Bermuda College alongside non-profit groups Imagine Bermuda, Bermuda is Love and Chewstick.

The ceremony will start off with a meet and greet to allow young attendees to connect with relevant community groups.

It will later feature a panel discussion involving Ajai Peets, of Bermuda Youth Connect, Gabriel Smith, of HuRen, and William Campbell, of Bermuda Is Love.

Mr Fubler noted the panellists were about the same ages as the members of the Progressive Group at the time of their 1959 Theatre Boycotts that led to the lifting of segregation.

Young people will then host presentations on the impact of Dr King internationally and in Bermuda. The presentations will either be spoken or performed in song.

Izola Harvey, the oldest remaining member of the Progressive Group, will attend, while remaining members Florenz Maxwell and Will Francis hope to join her.

Victor Fishington, a trade unionist, will also visit the ceremony to speak with youngsters.

The MLK/PG Youth Awards will take place in the Athene Lecture Theatre at Bermuda College in Paget on Saturday between 5.30pm and 7pm, with the meet and greet at 5pm.

Attendees can register for the free event through Bermuda Is Love’s website.
