Maths whizzes hold their own in Toronto
Bermudian pupils showed off their numerical, problem-solving and teamwork skills during a competition in Toronto this month.
Planet Math said that 14 students from grades 2 through 8 joined others from around the world at the Spirit of Math Global Round on August 13.
Spirit of Math helps high-performing students master mathematics and develop successful habits through problem solving, a unique curriculum, group work and drills.
Bermuda participants took part in the individual, group and arcade rounds and earned one gold, five silver, one bronze and nine merit awards.
The statement said: “Beyond the competition, the Global Round gave students the opportunity to meet young mathematicians from around the world, experience an international academic environment and celebrate their passion for mathematics.
“The students’ achievements are particularly encouraging as Spirit of Math does not currently have an established programme in Bermuda.
“Their participation and success demonstrate the enthusiasm and potential that exists locally for high quality mathematics enrichment opportunities.”
Kevin Warner, a cofounder of Planet Math, explained: “Mathematics is so much more than equations on a page, it is a universal language that builds logical reasoning, resilience and creative thinking.
“As we work to expand higher level maths enrichment right here in Bermuda, these 14 students have shown us that our island’s future in Stem is infinitely bright.”
Sergio Pitcher, another Planet Math cofounder, said: “This was our first Global Round and it’s only the beginning.
“We’re already looking forward to another local round in February and returning to the Global Round in 2027 with even more students representing Bermuda.”
Kimberley Langen, the founder and chief executive of Spirit of Math, said the competition “brings together some of the brightest young minds from around the world to challenge themselves, celebrate achievement, and discover their potential”.
She added: “While this year's Global Round was proudly hosted in Toronto, Canada, we are deeply grateful for the support of our Bermuda partners, whose commitment to excellence helps inspire students to reach new heights in mathematics and learning.”
Planet Math is the official Spirit of Math partner on the island and hopes to bring the programme to Bermuda soon.
