Somersfield Academy has provided financial support to four students who demonstrated academic excellence and the potential to contribute to global issues on the island.

A statement said Dezirae Darrell, Keniae Burgess, Kritik Rangta and Aniah Tucker all earned the school’s Equity and Merit scholarships this year.

The statement explained: “Their experiences embody what the scholarship is all about: giving students the opportunity to pursue their interests and make a difference in our school and wider community.”

The Equity and Merit Scholarship provides full or partial tuition assistance to eligible pupils who demonstrate “academic ability, strong character, ambition and a commitment to Somersfield’s vision, mission and values”.

Ms Darrell, set to graduate next year, has been an Equity and Merit scholar for three years and previously served as student council president and participated in the Youth Climate Summit.

The statement said: “Her global politics extended essay explores questions surrounding cultural relativism and human rights, while her commitment to mentoring younger students reflects the importance she places on helping others.”

Ms Darrell said: “Being an Equity and Merit scholar has given me so many opportunities that I might not have had otherwise.”

Ms Burgess, of the 2028 graduating class, is secretary of the school’s junior justice, equity, diversity and inclusion committee and also serves on the student leadership council.

She said being in the programme means “putting your all, your true, genuine effort into everything you do at school”.

Mr Rangta, set to graduate in 2029, received the scholarship for the second time and helps with Somersfield’s after school programme.

He said: “You have to set the example, even if it’s not fully on display — you hold yourself to a high standard.”

Ms Tucker, of the Class of 2030, has been at Somersfield since P3. She plays football and volleyball.

She said: “The Equity and Merit Scholarship gave me the opportunity to continue here, and I feel the opportunities I have at Somersfield will help me in the long run.”

Tanisha Edwards, Somersfield’s director of student life, added: “Each student brings something different to Somersfield.

“Their unique gifts and talents add to the richness of our school culture.

“They’re getting involved, trying new things and finding ways to contribute to our school and wider community.”

The statement acknowledged support of the scholarship from Sompo International and Oakley Capital Investments.

Applications are open for the 2027-28 scholarship.
