Throngs of people last night lined the Hamilton waterfront to enjoy the Christmas Boat Parade, which was packed with family entertainment.

In the words of cohost DJ Chubb, there was “something for everyone” and despite a late spell of rain threatening the much anticipated fireworks, they went ahead with a bang.

About 30 boats put on dazzling light displays and many entrants included big inflatable festive characters and music.

Lady Bird was not only named the overall winner but also picked up the Best Originality and Best Community Message categories. Pure Play took the People’s Choice and second place.

There were giant fun castles, roller skating, face painting and tons of vendors as well as music and fun commentary by Patrina O’Connor Paynter.

Matthew Bishop was there with his young son Henry. He said “It’s great being here after Covid and seeing so many people out. We really enjoyed watching all the lights on the boats. Bermuda can be quite sleepy sometimes but we are having a great time tonight. This is good for Bermuda.”

Ezekiel Greenwood was with his son, Amir, enjoying “a lovely evening”. He said his son particularly loved the fun castles and the boats.

“The atmosphere is very family-oriented and warming. There’s lots here for the children. We’re having a good time.”

Sharon Riviere, a senior, was walking around taking in the atmosphere and described the event as “marvellous”.

She said: “There’s lots to do for the children and, as Bermuda is a boating community, it’s great to see the parade.”

Shakeitah Simons was there with her daughter Jahlae Minks-Simons and said the event was well-organised.

Even though there were lots of food vendors the queues were long throughout most of the event.

Police officers on duty said the event went smoothly with no major incidents.

City of Hamilton parking officers said there were not many violations but that some vehicles were holding up the flow of traffic on Front Street by parking in bus stops and taxi spots.
