A big night in Manhattan celebrating last year’s Broadway theatre stars also came with a moment in the spotlight for Bermudian performers — Jonathan and Nicholas Christopher.

The brothers, professional actors in the Broadway revival of the musical Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which was nominated for the Best Musical Revival, took to the stage with the ensemble during the televised Tony Awards ceremony on Sunday.

Family members, including proud father Ed Christopher, the Hamilton Town Crier, watched from their New York hotel room.

Highlights included the camera catching Nicholas beside actor Josh Groban, who plays the Victorian villain barber — a character that premiered on Broadway in 1979 and opened in March for its latest revival.

Their father said: “They did the opening number of Sweeney Todd; the whole ensemble was there. You get a couple of seconds of Jonathan singing a part and Nicholas joining.”

Nicholas plays the rival barber Adolfo Pirelli in Stephen Sondheim’s musical, and is also the standby for the title character, while Jonathan is part of the ensemble.

Their father said the appearance carried some weight in showbusiness: “It’s big to say you performed there, especially as an original cast member. To have that on your resume means a lot.”

Broadway actors came together after the awards for the after party full of the camaraderie that comes with theatre.

“They are really all backing each other’s shows to make it,” Mr Christopher told The Royal Gazette.

But for their father, who also indulges in musical theatre, their appearance brought a special boost.

“That’s Bermudians,” Mr Christopher said. “We don’t stand in the background for too long.”
