US artist to give free presentation on her work

Story time: Shanta Laster will talk about her art and inspiration at a free even in St George’s this evening, July 21, 2023 (Photograph supplied)

A Connecticut-based artist with a lifelong love of Bermuda will give a presentation on her work tomorrow.

Shanta Laster, who describes herself as a multi-disciplined artist, will discuss her career and what inspires her work at the free Story Time event organised by St George’s business Long Story Short, owned by Kristin White.

Earlier this year, Ms Laster contacted Long Story Short asking if the store would be interested in carrying her artwork and prints.

Ms White, who launched Story Time last September in a bid to boost business in the Olde Towne, said: “The products in my store are chosen because I feel connected to the stories of the makers so I was definitely interested in learning more about Shanta.

“She has a love for the island and has been visiting Bermuda since she was a child. After reviewing her work, which has a strong female focus, I thought she’d be perfect for a Story Time.”

Ms Laster said in her message to Ms White that her family’s love affair with Bermuda began when her mother won a trip to the island in the 1960s.

Ms Laster said: “Later when my mother divorced she, as a single mom, took us kids to the island for summer vacations and introduced us to local families.

“Our summers on the island were spent with our Bermudian friends that formed into family bonds that span over 20 years. I have a strong connection to the island … that I draw upon in my art and when I return.

“It is the only locale where I truly have a proper reset.”

The free event will be held at Somers Wharf in St George’s from 6.30pm.

Ms Laster’s artwork, original pastels and note card prints, will be on display and for sale via Long Story Short.

Selected businesses will stay open on Story Time evenings.

The August Story Time will feature celebrated author Angela Barry. Dr Barry will be reading an excerpt from her novel The Drowned Forest.

Ms White will headline the September event with Stories and Shenaniganery.
