Free talk tonight on plastic pollution in our waters

The team behind a major survey of plastic pollution in the waters around Bermuda will tonight talk about their findings.

Plastic Tides — which carried out an 11-day trip around Bermuda on paddleboards — looked at plastic pollution in the ocean.

Now they are to discuss plastic pollution levels, the survey and advise people on how to cut down on plastic waste in a special free talk at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI).

Expedition member Gordon Middleton said: “We aim to give an overview of how and why plastics are ending up in our oceans and how we can come together to stop it.

“We'll talk on a variety of points, from the basis of the issue to the finer details, to the effects of plastic pollution and finally possible solutions.”

The team also produced a film of their work on the Island.

Mr Middleton added: “As one may expect, plastic pollution was found to be very prevalent in Bermuda's waters.”

And he said: “Lastly, we will talk on the subject of social outreach and how we are making waves with the younger generation through social media presence and our novel approach to citizen science.”

Prints of images captured by the team, which insists on green technology like solar panels during their field trips, and environmentally-friendly Klean Kanteen water bottles will also be on sale to help raise funds for future work.

The event starts at 5.30pm at the BUEI headquarters on Crow Lane. Hamilton.
