Birthday surprise for Pebbles the seal

First Prev 1 2 3 Next Last

It's not every animal that is treated to a birthday surprise.

But for Pebbles the Atlantic harbour seal, it must have felt like all her birthdays had come at once on Wednesday when she was given a frozen cake of fish.

All the other seals at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo were kept to one side as staff gathered to wish the 23-year-old seal happy birthday.

Pebbles, who was born at BAMZ in 1993, is the youngest of the aquarium's seals and was hand-reared from two days old.

In the wild, the average lifespan of an Atlantic harbour seal is about 25 years.

Happy birthday!: aquarist Kascia White presents Pebbles with her cake of fish
Special day: Pebbles is treated to some fish
Feeding time: head aquarist Lisa Ray with Pebbles as a pup
