The community is invited to join an island-wide clean-up being organised by an environmental charity.

Keep Bermuda Beautiful will host the annual Great Big Bermuda Clean-Up during Earth Week from April 22 to 28.

Last year’s event resulted in more than 1,700 volunteers removing about 25,000lb of roadside litter and illegally dumped bulk waste from 60 locations across the island in a week.

Anyone wishing to participate in this year’s event can either organise a clean-up, volunteer for the grand finale event or make a donation to KBB.

Traci Burgess, the executive director for the charity, said: “This is recognised as Bermuda’s largest annual spring clean and it is a major land-based clean-up initiative.

“Last year, the grand finale was in Smith’s, and this year it’s in Devonshire on April 28. We are looking for upwards of 300 volunteers to come out and make a difference.

“The starting and end point is at Friendship Vale Park on Palmetto Road, the volunteers spread out through the Parish from there. We are inviting Devonshire stakeholders, community groups, businesses and others to join.

“KBB continues to strive for a cleaner, greener and more beautiful Bermuda for all. We encourage everyone to take greater responsibility for their waste management habits, to reduce waste, eliminate litter and keep the island beautiful.”

Ms Burgess said that in 2022, KBB volunteers removed 82,500lb of litter illegal dumping and ocean pollution over the course of the year. In 2023, that figure jumped to 155,000lb — an increase in volume of 88 per cent.

She added: “We have partnerships with other organisations doing major clean-ups and restoration projects that are making a difference. KBB is always about the community and its success is because of the stakeholders, volunteers, partnerships and everybody working together for the greater good of our beautiful island home.”

Ms Burgess thanked BF&M for its continued support and sponsorship of the event. The company is kicking off the clean up on Earth Day on April 22.
