Bermuda can now draw on international expertise as the island pushes to lower its electricity costs through greater efficiency, Alexa Lightbourne has stated.

The Minister of Home Affairs announced Bermuda’s formal membership in the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance, in the wake of her signing of the group’s establishing declaration.

It came when Ms Lightbourne attended the group’s ministerial round table, hosted by the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, in February 2026 in Dubai.

The alliance has more than 20 participating countries and more than 50 strategic partners. Even though Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory, it is treated as a state participant.

Ms Lightbourne said the move put the island on a better footing to engage with states and groups working to address “many of the same energy challenges we face” as Bermuda looks to its energy future — including through the National Electricity Sector Policy 2026, guiding development through to 2045.
