Howard’s hoping for a lucky draw

Top local show jumper Claire Howard seen jumping Just a Rose.

Claire Howard will be hoping to get the luck of the draw when she heads to Guatemala tomorrow for the FEI World Jumping Challenge Final. The Bermudian will arrive at the event in time to be a part of the draw for the horses on which the riders will compete.Unlike other sports where athletes carry their own equipment, this specific event sees riders allocated horses with which they are not familiar. When Howard is handed her mount she’ll compete on the that horse for the duration of the competition. She who was involved in the competition last year at the same venue and this time makes the trek with coach Dawn Fox who is hopeful of that Howard will be lucky in the draw.“She has a lot of experience but in this sort of competition it is mostly about the horse that you get in the draw,” said Fox.“Everyone has a fair chance at a horse but that is a huge part of it and horses do have good and bad days. As far as Claire goes, she is up to the task.”All riders will be at the opening ceremony tomorrow with qualification for the Final starting on Monday. The format of the event has been changed this year in order to assist the horses who will be competing throught the week. One disadvantage the riders may have is lack of competitive rides before the Final.Bermuda’s equestrian schedule this year has been limited on jumping events, according to Fox.But she’s optimistic that Howard will put up a good show at a venue she knows although the course lay-out will be slightly different from last year.“She has been doing well so far, she is an accomplished rider so I’m not concerned about her ability to perform,” said Fox.“Unfortunately we haven’t had a lot of competitions in Bermuda this year so we have been training at home and getting ready.“From a competition standpoint we have had a few places where we have competed but for her it’s mostly about being ready for the event when it starts.“She hasn’t had the best of competitions lately but we have rectified the problems. Ideally we would have liked more competition in preparation but that is how it goes.“The jump course will be different but we are familiar with the place that it is being held.”The FEI World Jumping Challenge was created to provide less experienced jumping riders from developing/emerging national federations on five continents with an opportunity to compete at international level without having to leave their own countries.Nations involved in this programme are those who do not traditionally take part in international competitions.
