Bermuda crowned jumping champions

Up and over: Lopes, riding Batteries Not Included, was the top performer in class 1 at the Caribbean Equestrian Association’s Regional Jumping Challenge at the National Equestrian Centre on Sunday

The local equestrian community were jumping for joy yesterday after it was announced that Bermuda were victorious in the team and individual categories at the Caribbean Equestrian Association’s Regional Jumping Challenge.

Despite the challenges and disruption brought on by Hurricane Nicole, Bermuda’s riders rose to the occasion and secured strong scores in all three-height divisions during Sunday’s competition at the National Equestrian Centre.

The island’s riders were Elizabeth Madeiros, Casey Truran, Kelsey Amos, Bevis Tetlow, Tyler Lopes and Ariane Willmott.

Madeiros and Truran competed in the one metres category, Amos and Tetlow in the .85 category and Lopes and Willmott in the .70 category.

Bermuda’s riders also won overall individual categories, with Lopes, Amos and Madeiros among the top riders.

Lopes was the top performer in class 1 with Batteries Not Included, Amos in Class 2 with Wiratoro and Madeiros in Class 3 with Mr Bentley.

Final results and placings were confirmed yesterday after Jamaica completed their round of the competition.

Presently in its second year, the Caribbean Equestrian Association’s Regional Jumping Challenge offers competitors of all ages an opportunity to measure their skills against riders within the region.

This year marked Bermuda’s first appearance in the competition.

Sunday’s event at Vesey Street was judged by Judy Hagen of Bermuda.
