Correia endures tough outing at World Finals

Philip Correia endured a disappointing outing at the FEI Jumping World Finals, held in Quito, Ecuador, last week.

Having secured first place honours for Regional Zone 10 [1.20-1.30 metres] of the 2018 FEI Jumping World Challenge, which included Barbados and the Dominican Republic, Correia, was invited to compete in finals, with only the top two “Category A' riders from each of the ten geographical zones gaining an invitation.

A total of 278 competitors competed in the 1.20-1.30 height division.

There, he competed against riders from Algeria, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Indonesia, India, Israel, Morocco, New Zealand, Panama, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The finals consisted of two qualifying competitions held on Thursday and Saturday respectively, with the combined scores from the two qualifying competitions determining the top 10 riders that would progress to the Finals.

However it was not be for Correia, as he and his borrowed horse from the host nation, incurred two refusals in the first qualifying competition which resulted in elimination.

As a consequence of this elimination, Correia was not eligible to compete in the Final competition held on Sunday.

In the final, Giorgia Leromazzo, of Dominican Republic, took top honours, ahead of New Zealand's Christine Cornege and Matthiew Morrison, of New Zealand.
