Simsfield Hardtimes primed to break overall track record

Simsfield Stables will look to extend their impressive win streak when harness racing resumes at the National Equestrian Centre tonight.

The team’s gelding, Simsfield Hardtimes, has won six heats on the trot competing in the Free for All division where he has also posted the season’s fastest time of 1:01.4 with driver Kirista Rabain in the bike.

“He has had six straight wins now and has basically been a double heat winner for the last three race days so he’s feeling good,” owner and trainer Aaron Sims said.

Sims’ pony has twice posted the season’s fastest time which is two fifths of a second shy of the gelding record it shares with rival War Machine and three fifths off of the overall track record of 1:01.1 held by retired mare, Google Me.

Sims said his pony and driver Rabain have good chemistry between them.

“Hardtimes and Kirista are obviously a good team together,” he added. “We have a good training programme at home. I train the horse while she basically gets in and races him and he’s coming into his self.”

Sims’s pony did not make the best of starts to the year but has gradually gone from strength to strength.

“We haven’t missed any races but at the beginning of the year I did not get as much track time in with him before the season started,” he said.

“I had to make a few little adjustments with him. He was not quite himself so we figured out some issues and last weekend and the weekend before he put down the fastest time of the year, which is 1:01.4.”

Having come just shy of the overall track record, Sims remains optimistic his pony can achieve the feat.

“The record is there, We knocked right on the door last year a fifth of a second off the record and we are putting down some good times pretty early,” he added.

“It’s still early and he’s still working on getting his race fitness up, so hopefully we can drip some faster times.

“Hopefully in the future we have some brighter things from Hardtimes and Kirista and the Simsfield Stables team and we can get that record.”
