A rare Bermuda Government banknote that has survived almost a century in the elements will be featured at an auction in London this week.

The 1927 note, which is listed at a starting price of £4,600 (about $6,200), will feature among other notes at the World Banknotes auction to be hosted by the Noonans Mayfair auction house in London today.

The £1 banknote, which is dated September 30, 1927, was described as “astonishingly high-grade”.

It features the Hamilton skyline and the capital’s waterfront, with iconic Easter lilies in bloom in the foreground.

It is said to be of “the finest example” and of “exceptional paper quality” by the Florida-headquartered PMG, the world’s largest third‑party grading service for banknotes.

The auction features dozens of notes, grouped in lots, and they include an 1896 African Banking Corporation Ltd Rhodesian-issue note.

The note is listed as “an extraordinarily high-denomination” and is said to be one of only two such pieces of the currency in existence.

Another highlight of the auction is a series of “emergency-issue” notes that were printed by the Pakistan Government in 1948, a year after the partition of what was then British India.

Originally presented to Liaquat Ali Khan, the first prime minister of Pakistan, the lot includes original photographs taken at the inauguration of the notes at a function held by the State Bank of Pakistan in July 1948, where the notes were presented.

The auction also features a $500 riyal note issued by the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency — now the Saudi Central Bank.

The note was introduced for the first time in 1984, which the auctioneer stated was “in response to the expansion of cash transactions driven by Saudi Arabia’s economic development”.
