Doors opening for budding designer

Budding fashion designer Meagan Wellman is searching for her big break in London. So far, it's been one exciting ride.

Doors have regularly opened for the 23-year-old, enabling her to show her latest collection around the city.

“Im always learning new things everyday about the industry and how it works,” she said.

“Things you don't learn at university, which is eye-opening. It's an exciting time for me as anything can happen.”

Her latest thrill came last week when she got the chance to take part in a small show called Fashion at the Union, in Soho.

How did this recent opportunity come about?

The opportunity came about at random. The event organisers stumbled upon my work and I was e-mailed with an invite to take part in the Fashion at the Union show, which was hosted by Space Events London.

What was the experience like?

It was great! As it was a modelling agency organising it, the models were very professional and I enjoyed the overall experience.

Preparations didn't take too long as I used [my] spring/summer 2015 collection, so the majority of the work was already done.

Plus, backstage was a lot of fun — and hectic once the show started!

Q: What is the fashion scene like in London right now? How does living in a big city inspire your designs?

The fashion scene here is so diverse, it's amazing!

There's so much inspiration to draw from. The city itself influences my work a bit, especially when it comes to the styling of my looks. Also, there's a lot of contrasts in London, whether that be from architecture or the culture clashes. Those are things I'm looking forward to exploring in my work.

Has anything special come from this latest opportunity? Did you meet any big names in the fashion industry or learn anything yourself?

I invited two members of staff from the Government of Bermuda's London office and one attended, which was great. Other than that, it's still too early to tell if anything has come from it.

I'm sure something will happen in a few weeks if it does. I usually find that's the case.

What were the high and low points of the day for you?

The high point was being able to showcase a new look that I included into the collection.

The low was that I couldn't direct the hair and make up. All the designers had to use the same look, which wasn't bad, but I can't wait to have my own show so I can have more creative licence.

When you aren't taking part in these shows, how do you spend your time?

I work part-time in retail, so after work, along with during my days off, is when I get my own fashion design work done.

There's a lot of planning involved in these shows and I try to add some fun details into everything I work on as well. That keeps me busy.
