Nathan Trott future uncertain after Cardiff deal looks unlikely
Nathan Trott’s Cardiff future appears uncertain after a leading Danish football magazine reported that the Bermudian goalkeeper has turned down offers to join the Welsh side permanently.
Trott joined Cardiff on a season-long loan deal from FC Copenhagen in August and he has proved a shrewd acquisition after making 41 appearances as the Welsh side sealed a return to the Championship with four games to spare.
Cardiff have an option to sign the 27-year-old permanently but it is believed that several Championship clubs have shown an interest in Trott, with Tipsbladet, a weekly sports magazine focusing on football, reporting this week that the goalkeeper has rebuffed Cardiff’s advances.
“Trott has so far rejected Cardiff’s offers and is looking elsewhere for his options, which are many,” read the article.
“At the same time, he is open to a return to FC Copenhagen after a completely new sporting management has arrived with the farewell to Sune Smith-Nielsen and Jacob Neestrup.
“At FC Copenhagen, last summer’s acquisition and first-choice goalkeeper Dominik Kotarski has not had the best possible first year, and this opens up the question of whether the club should have a new goalkeeper after a season outside the top six.
“Maybe Trott will end up back in Copenhagen, where his contract runs until the summer of 2028.”
That reporting has been lent credence by Cardiff coach Brian Barry-Murphy remaining noncommittal when asked if Trott will be at the club at the start of next season.
“I think he’s done great over the course of the season and we’re very grateful to have him,” Barry-Murphy said of Trott after he kept a clean sheet and victory over Port Vale on Tuesday night.
“Like with the other players, there’s so many different moving parts to these things, speculation is a waste of time. If something happens then it happens and if not, it's all good.”
Trott has struggled to find a permanent home and had loan spells between 2019 and 2024 with AFC Wimbledon, Nancy in France and Velje in Denmark while on the books at West Ham United. He was sold to Copenhagen in 2024 and played 17 times for them, winning a Danish Superliga winners medal, before being allowed to go on loan to Cardiff.
