Kenni Thompson refuses to rule out playing again after Bermuda win

On a night in which she played what could be her last match for Bermuda in an international friendly against Belize, Kenni Thompson hinted that she could have a change of heart about retirement.

Keunna Dill scored the only goal of the match in the 47th minute to give Bermuda a 1-0 win at Flora Duffy Stadium, with Thompson featuring for 83 minutes before she was replaced by Tayte Glasgow.

As she mingled with family and friends on the terraces after the encounter, the 25-year-old who announced her immediate retirement from football last month, was undecided as to if this was really her last match.

“I don’t know if this is the last one, but it is for a while definitely,” Thompson told The Royal Gazette.

“You never know what’s going to happen in life and we’ll see what happens afterwards. I’m definitely going to miss the girls but I’ll see them around and it’s just a great group to be a part of.

“They’re such amazing people and they’ve helped me through so much in my life. I’m so grateful for all of them.”

Reflecting on the two matches, Thompson was pleased to see fresh faces brought into the team.

“I think we’ve had a lot of new people come into the squad this tour,” she said.

“It was nice to see some changes and some new faces. I’s great to see the strength and depth that we have within the squad and on the island.

“We’ve got a lot of young players coming in and to see them come onto the pitch and perform against a strong team was really great to see.

“It’s always great to have family and friends watching. I’ve played so many games in my career and not many times I’ve been able to have my family, so when I get to be home and have them with me, it’s always really special.”

Interim head coach Karl Roberts thought his players put on a better show than they did in the opening fixture on Thursday.

“I think our girls stepped up and we actually played better football tonight than we did a couple of nights ago,” he said.

“Even though the scoreline didn’t show it, the football was better. We knew Belize was going to come with something, more so tonight than two days ago. “We played against them two years ago and they’re a good team, so we knew what to expect from them.”

The start of the match was delayed by 52 minutes due to a kit clash as both sides wore predominantly blue uniforms. Bermuda eventually changed to pink.

When the encounter got under way, the delay seemed to have a negative effect on both teams as they struggled to string together passes.

“The delay can play on a player’s mind,” Roberts said. “We’re focused to start a game and then the delay alone can affect players.

“We did our best to get them to ease their thoughts and not worry too much about the delay, stay focused on the game and what their responsibilities are.

“Hats off to the ladies and also to the coaching staff. They’ve done really well and it was good and pleasing football to see.”

In the 22nd minute, a timely intervention by Zemira Webb stopped Vailene Lambert’s charge at goal. Captain Koa Goodchild then sent a brilliant through ball for Dill but her attempt was blocked for a corner.

From the resultant corner kick, Thompson's dipping effort was punched out by Jasmin Armstrong.

Brilliant work on the left by Thompson in the 40th minute saw her send a perfect ball into the box for Dill, whose effort went wide. A chance fell for the eventual scorer on the stroke of half-time when she was put through by Jya Ratteray-Smith, but she lost her footing.

Bermuda took the lead two minutes after the break when Goodchild found Dill, with the forward rounding the keeper to score.

In the 67th minute, Ratteray-Smith forced Armstrong into a low diving save after Belize had failed to keep out Thompson’s free kick. Two minutes later, Webb shot over from another Thompson set piece.

Sharifa Crockwell had to deal with an awkward bounce from Alisha Terry’s shot nine minutes before the end and in stoppage time the Bermuda goalkeeper tipped the ball over for a corner to ensure that her team walked away victorious.
