The Bermuda Football Association is taking part in an “emergency” Concacaf meeting on Thursday to discuss Fifa president Gianni Infantino’s plan to sell commercial rights for the World Cup to private investors.

The 41 Concacaf nations met online at 1.30pm Bermuda time to formulate a response to Infantino’s decision to sell 30 per cent of rights to outside investors, including Thrive Eternal, which Is run by Joshua Kushner, the younger brother of US president Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

The meeting comes just hours after European nations voted 55-0 to boycott all Fifa competitions. It is the first time an entire confederation has voted to boycott major Fifa tournaments, with the English Football Association and contemporaries across Europe deciding they have no option but to take a dramatic stand.

“Uefa and its 55 member associations stand as one,” a Uefa statement said. “We unanimously and unequivocally reject Fifa’s proposal to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other Fifa competitions to private investors.

“The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. It is one of football’s greatest sporting legacies. It has been built over generations by players, national teams and supporters across every continent. No part of it should ever be surrendered to private investors. The World Cup is not for sale.”

The pressure is now on Concacaf, which represents Bermuda and other countries in North and Central America and the Caribbean, to follow suit. In a statement on Wednesday it said it was “deeply concerned by the lack of due process”, while the Asian Football Confederation also expressed its unhappiness.

Infantino, through Fifa, has sent a letter to all 211 nations represented in its organisation, saying that each member will be able to access $40m (£30m) in funding to “develop the game” once the deal is finalised.

He has set a deadline of September 19 for football federations to accept his plans if they want to access an initial $20m (£15m).
