Bermuda Under-14 coach Vashun Blanchette has saluted his players for their courageous display at the Caribbean Football Union Challenge Series.

Blanchette’s side went undefeated through the group stage and advanced to the Tier I semi-finals as the best runner-up from the three groups. Their excellent run ended on Friday with a 1-0 defeat to Jamaica, who came into the tournament as champions.

Having reached the final of Tier 2 in Trinidad & Tobago two years ago where they lost to Barbados on penalties, the coach was pleased to see the boys compete against teams like Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

“Overall, it has been a great experience for this group of players,” Blanchette told The Royal Gazette.

“Naturally, there is disappointment in losing a semi-final, but that is part of sport and something the boys can learn from as they continue their football journeys.

“Hopefully, this group can continue to play meaningful and highly competitive matches on a consistent basis, as that will bode well in terms of development.

“Our ability to compete against countries such as Jamaica and Dominican Republic demonstrates that we deserve to be in Tier I and we look forward to future opportunities with excitement.”

The coach also recognised the support staff for their work behind the scenes in ensuring players had a great tournament experience.

“I also want to acknowledge the coaching staff and backroom support team,” he said.

“Everyone worked tirelessly throughout the competition. Their commitment was instrumental in providing the players with lasting memories from their first exposure to international football.”

Bermuda’s unbeaten group run and semi-final appearance marks a strong statement for the programme. Blanchette will now hope the CFU platform prepares the players for more challenges as they move to another age group.
