Nahki Wells hopes to continue his good run of form as Luton Town attempt to get back to winning ways at home to Stockport on Wednesday.

The Bermuda striker is off to a strong start to the season after netting four goals in five league and cup appearances to date, including a brace in a 5-2 defeat away to Mansfield Town in Sky Bet League One at the weekend.

Wells came off the bench in the 62nd minute with his team trailing 5-0 and converted from the penalty spot in the 76th minute before finding the net again in the second minute of added time to give the scoreline some respectability.

“Obviously disappointed we wasn’t able to get the points as that’s the most important thing but we just weren’t ourselves for one reason or another,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“Credit to Mansfield, but we didn’t turn up and show what we are capable of and what we have done over the last four or five. But it’s football and that happens sometimes off the back of a tough game against Chelsea.

“Disappointed not to start the game considering I didn’t start against Chelsea. I had assumptions I would start the league game, but it wasn’t to be.

“One positive was I was able to come on and make an impact; win the penalty, take it and then get another one in added time. It still stings that we lost, but it’s a small plus that I can take from the game and keeps the run going.

“Games come thick and fast so we can’t dwell. We have to move on quickly to stop Stockport on Wednesday night. We go again so I’ll hopefully look to continue the run that I am on and hopefully we can bounce back in front of our home crowd.

“We’ve got back-to-back home games so we need to make a statement and have a really good reaction on Wednesday night and hopefully I can go and get number five and keep the run going.”

The 36-year-old netted ten goals in all competitions last season and he is hoping to improve on that this time around.

Luton are thirteenth in League One after three games while Stockport are third, a point adrift of Wells’s former club, Huddersfield Town.

The Hatters went into Sunday’s contest coming off the back of a courageous performance in a 2-0 loss away to Premier League opponents Chelsea in the second round of the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge last Wednesday night.

Wells entered the fray in the 78th minute with the visiting side trailing 1-0 and seeking a vital equaliser.

However, Luton’s fate was sealed before he even had a touch of the ball when Chelsea winger Estevão’s low drive struck Hatters defender Hakeem Odoffin en route to goal.

Chelsea dominated possession and struck the woodwork twice, while Luton goalkeeper Josh Keeley produced a string of excellent saves.

“The Chelsea game was obviously somewhat of a free hit for us. We went out and did our best, but they were far superior to us and we were not able to do it,” Wells said.

“But we gave a good account of ourselves and for me it was a pleasure to be on the same pitch with some of those world-class players and get to test myself against them at a stadium I have never been to.

“A proud moment for myself in that regard but disappointed to come out of it not having really been able to affect the game like I would’ve wanted. But it’s what you can expect against sides at that level.”
