Nahki Wells continues scoring run in win over Stockport

Nahki Wells is congratulated after scoring the opening goal against Stockport

Nahki Wells bagged his fifth goal of the season as Luton Town returned to winning ways in EFL League One on Tuesday night.

The Bermuda striker, who was named Luton captain for the match, scored the opening goal in his team’s 2-0 home win against Stockport County at Kenilworth Road.

Wells broke the deadlock in the 51st minute with a tap-in from close range and then made way for Northern Ireland striker Callum Marshall, who doubled Luton’s advantage in the 76th minute with an exquisite left-footed finish from outside of the box to put the game beyond Stockport’s reach.

The result leaves Luton seventh in the League One standings, level on points with Blackpool, Burton Albion, Barnsley and Cambridge United, who occupy the play-off positions on goal difference.

Wells has enjoyed considerable success against Stockport lately after scoring twice in Luton’s 3-1 win against them in the EFL Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium in April.

Jack Wilshere’s team went into Tuesday night’s match on the back of successive defeats against Premier League opponents Chelsea (2-0) in the second round of the Carabao Cup and a 5-2 league defeat at Mansfield Town, in which Wells scored both goals.

Elsewhere on Tuesday night, Nathan Trott’s Cardiff City suffered their first league defeat of the season after going down 2-1 away to Queen’s Park Rangers in the Sky Bet Championship at Loftus Road.

The hosts led 2-0 after Jamaican forward Rumarn Burrell struck in the 36th and 53rd minutes before Bluebirds defender Perry Ng pulled one back for the away side in the 75th minute.

Defeat leaves Cardiff nineteenth in the Championship standings and still in search of a first league win of the season.
