Nahki Wells completed a hat-trick of a different sort in Luton Town’s 2-0 win over Stockport County in Sky Bet League One on Wednesday night.

The Bermuda striker broke the deadlock at Kenilworth Road in the 51st minute to get his name on the scoresheet for the third consecutive league match.

He has now scored five goals in six appearances in all competitions to date, half the amount he scored in his debut season with the Hatters.

“Three league games back-to-back scoring is a huge feat and something I haven’t done in a long time, so long may it continue,” Wells told The Royal Gazette.

“I’m happy to keep the run going. I had a really good moment in the first half where the keeper probably made one of the best saves I’ve ever seen. That stopped me from scoring in the first half but then in the second half just right place, right time and I tapped it home to score a huge goal for us, which gets us the three points.”

The 36-year-old has enjoyed considerable success against Stockport lately after scoring twice in Luton’s 3-1 win against them in the EFL Trophy final at Wembley Stadium in April.

“Stockport has been a lucky side for me,” said Wells, who was named man of the match in the EFL Trophy final.

“Obviously I scored the brace against Stockport at Wembley so they have been a bit of a fortunate side to play against in the last year.”

While pleased to have extended his scoring streak, Wells takes even greater pleasure in seeing Luton return to winning ways in the league after suffering a heavy 5-2 defeat against Mansfield Town last time out.

“A really good performance and obviously we needed to bounce back from the Mansfield game, and we got the response that we wanted,” said Wells, who donned the captain’s armband for the match.

“We made some changes to our playing style and our shape because Stockport are a really good side and have been in really good form, so we needed to counteract a huge aspect of their game.

“We were able to allow them to have a little more possession than we would’ve liked and look to hurt them in transition, be solid and compact, and as you can see keeping a clean sheet limiting them to very few opportunities was a step in the right direction. It was always about bouncing back, and we were able to do that.”

Northern Ireland striker Callum Marshall, who replaced Wells in the 65th minute, doubled Luton’s advantage in the 76th minute with an exquisite left-footed finish from outside of the box to put the game beyond Stockport’s reach.

The result leaves Luton seventh in the League One standings, level on points with Blackpool, Burton Albion, Barnsley and Cambridge United, who occupy the play-off positions on goal difference.

The Hatters are only three points adrift of leaders and Wells’ former club Huddersfield Town, who top the standings on goal difference over Sheffield Wednesday.

Luton will again look to capitalise on home advantage on Saturday when they host a Leyton Orient side who trail them by one point in the standings.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Nathan Trott’s Cardiff City suffered their first league defeat of the season after going down 2-1 away to Queens Park Rangers in the Championship at Loftus Road.

Defeat leaves the Bluebirds nineteenth in the Championship standings and still in search of a first league win of the season.

Trott and his team-mates are also back in action in the Championship on Saturday when they host Portsmouth, who are level with them on three points.
