Bermuda will aim to get their Concacaf Nations League campaign back on track when they face St Lucia in their second League B Group B match at Daren Sammy Cricket Ground tonight (9pm Bermuda time).

After taking the lead through a first-half Enrique Russell penalty, John Barry Nusum’s side conceded two late goals to suffer a 2-1 defeat by Guadeloupe on Friday.

They also finished the match with nine players on the field after defenders Jorj Dublin and Lejaun Simmons were sent off.

“It was a disappointing result the other day, so we just want to make sure we respond in decent fashion and put in a good performance against St Lucia,” Nusum told The Royal Gazette.

“We missed an opportunity to get three points but the players have bounced back and we're ready to go. Again, you’ve got to have a quick memory in these types of tournaments.

“Win or lose, we just focus on the next game and try to get the best performance we can.”

St Lucia are bottom of the four-team table after losing 2-0 to Barbados on Friday. With that match taking place after Bermuda’s encounter with Guadeloupe, Nusum and his technical team saw enough of their opponents to formulate a game plan.

“St Lucia played Barbados after our match with Guadeloupe, so we watched them,” the coach said.

“They are a pretty decent team, they have some dangerous players, so we definitely have to be wary of a few players on their team.

“We have a game plan that we would like to implement against them but it’s going to be a tough game.

“Similar to the game the other night, they bring some threats and we have to make sure that we’re on top of our game. We have to play at a decent level to combat what they’re trying to do.

“The effort was amazing the other night. We had a situation where a red card changed the game, so we just have to make sure that we make the right decisions in the right moments.

“Since the match on Friday we’ve had a couple of sessions just to go over some details. We debriefed from the previous match what we did well and what we didn’t do well.”

Not much separates Bermuda and St Lucia in the Concacaf rankings, with the Gombey Warriors ranked 23rd, two places higher than their opponents, but Nusum is not paying attention to those statistics.

“I’m not overly worried about the rankings,” the Bermuda coach said.

“Players, teams and coaches change, so we’ve to put our best effort in. We have to play the game and earn the three points.

Nusum will be forced to change his starting line-up to replace the suspended Dublin and Simmons. Nahki Wells is also available after being rested against Guadeloupe, with his flight only arriving a day before the match. The veteran forward is most likely to assume the captaincy.

“We’ll have two changes for sure and then we’ll see what the team looks like,” the coach added.

“We had our final session on Sunday just to make sure everyone’s fit and available, then we’ll make decisions from there.

“Nahki Wells has been in the training sessions. We have the understanding of what’s happening on our side and we’ll look to get him involved, he’s a big player for us and we need him to be involved.”
