PHC consider appeal over Enrique Russell red card
PHC Zebras are contemplating lodging an appeal to the Bermuda Football Association in the hopes of having influential captain Enrique Russell’s red card rescinded.
Russell and X-Roads Warriors centre back Jarye Bean were sent off by referee Dwight Jackson in the 75th minute after coming to blows in an off-the-ball incident during a heated Premier Division clash at Lord’s on Sunday.
“We have considered appealing and looked at taking the steps,” Zebras coach Cecoy Robinson told The Royal Gazette.
Russell insists his actions did not warrant being sent off.
“I should not have received a red card when I was retaliated against,” he said.
“We all know in football if something happens it stays there in that moment, but when you retaliate in the way that the opponent did that deserved a red.
“If you look at the video footage we do have of him hitting me in the back of the head and pushing me to the ground, I don’t see in what situation do I receive a red.
“I think from the referee’s viewpoint that was probably the safest option because he unsure, so I think once he sees the footage he will definitely change his mind.”
Deputising X-Roads coach Thaaqib Talbot confirmed that his club will not be appealing against Bean’s dismissal.
Russell is hoping his club do appeal against the red card which could possibly pave the way for him to play in the Dudley Eve Trophy semi-final against the same opponent at Devonshire Rec on Wednesday night.
“I trust my team to get the result without me, but I am hoping that the appeal goes forward as we want to be as strong as possible going into Wednesday,” he said.
“I don’t want to miss a semi-final. But if I do again I trust my team to get the result in the end.”
The Royal Gazette has reached out to Bermuda Football Association concerning the matter.
Russell scored PHC’s first two goals in Sunday’s 3-2 win over X-Roads before his afternoon came to an early end.
Teenager Rufaro Kunze came off the bench to grab a late winner for PHC, while Donavan Thompson and Kahmori Brangman replied for X-Roads.
