Nahki Wells scores eighth goal of season as Luton beat Leicester
Nahki Wells continued to show his worth to Luton Town by scoring his eighth goal of the season on Saturday.
Wells scored the opening goal in a 2-1 win as Luton climbed to tenth in EFL League One by beating Leicester City.
The 36-year-old scored from 14 yards in the 39th minute to give Luton a 1-0 lead at half time. But in a crazy finish Leicester went down to ten men in the 85th minute when John Lundstram was sent off before equalising in the 90th minute through Liam Cullen.
However, in the fourth minute of added time, Callum Marshall found the net for Luton to secure the points.
After the game Wells spoke to Luton Town’s website about the final few frenetic minutes.
“That was unbelievable,” Wells said. “That’s what football is about and it didn’t go the way we wanted to towards the end but it’s that spirit, that drive, the twelfth man and the support today that helped carry us over the line.
“It was a real blow them equalising with them being down to ten men but I shouted out to the boys that there was still time and I wanted to make sure that we still had that belief.”
Wells was substituted in the 76th minute but he was pleased to have found the crucial breakthrough for his side.
“I was close to scoring earlier and the keeper got in a good block,” Wells said.
“I also thought I could have had a penalty but we were all over them and I knew it was going to drop at some point.
“Clicks [Jordan Clark] did well to press and square the ball to me and I was delighted to score another goal, keep that run going and more importantly contribute to us getting the three points. That’s what my job is.”
Luton are three points outside of the play-off spots on 17 points and Wells feels his side’s home form will be important in a promotion push.
“This is our fortress,” Wells said.
“You can look back through the results and we’ve only had one defeat here. When we play here we have to take points, we have to put in good performances and we have to get the crowd behind us. The last two games we have been able to do that.
“But it’s about going again. This group needs to show more consistency and that’s been our Achilles' heel, but we’re working, we’re trying and I hope the support can understand that we are going to give 110 per cent and that’s what they saw today.”
Luton have another home game on Tuesday night against Doncaster Rovers.
Goalkeeper Nathan Trott joined Wells among the winners on Saturday as he kept a clean sheet in Cardiff’s 1-0 home win over Birmingham City.
Trott, who had little to do for most of the game, was called into action in the 90th minute, producing a superb stop to ensure the Bluebirds won their third home game in a row.
The win moves Cardiff up to sixteenth place in the Championship and they are next in action away at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
