Under-15 national team meet Fifa president Gianni Infantino
Bermuda’s under 15 football team met Fifa president Gianni Infantino in Azerbaijan on Tuesday.
The young Gombey Warriors met the under fire president during a rest day at the under-15 World Cup, where more than 180 Fifa member nations are competing over the course of ten days.
Infantino has been canvassing for votes in numerous countries as he attempts to gain re-election as Fifa president despite various football regional governing bodies withdrawing support for him over his attempt to sell off marketing and commercial rights to the World Cup.
The deadline of November 18 for contenders to announce their candidacy and oppose Infantino for the presidency is fast approaching but to date nobody has stepped forward with a credible chance.
The Bermuda team were on a rest day on Tuesday after completing their two group matches on Monday.
The young Gombey Warriors lost their final two group matches on Monday, going down 2-1 to Namibia and 5-0 against Poland to finish their group in fourth place.
They now head into a mini-tournament against other teams who failed to make it into the knockout stages proper to determine their final finishing position and captain De’Ari Trott is determined to make the most of his time in Azerbaijan.
“Competing at a U15 World Cup so far from home has been something to adjust to but it's been an incredible experience,” Trott said.
“Knowing we’re part of an historic moment for Bermuda and playing in the country’s first world Cup makes it even more special. Facing teams from around the world gives us the chance to measure ourselves on the global stage and it also helps us to learn and develop.”
The under-15s are next in action against Tajikistan on Wednesday.
