Beauty is big business. From the neighbourhood hair salon to the growing world of aesthetic medicine, it's an industry that continues to evolve, shaped by changing trends, new technology and increasingly discerning consumers.

In Bermuda, it's also an industry powered by people who have turned their passion into careers, built businesses from the ground up and, in some cases, spent decades earning the trust of their clients.

For this week’s RG Life, we’re going behind the scenes of the beauty industry, meeting five professionals whose experiences offer a glimpse into what it takes to succeed in a competitive and constantly changing field.

At Tangles, owner Simon Horrell has spent more than four decades building a business that has become a familiar name in Bermuda. Having arrived from England in the late 1970s, he eventually opened his own salon with a friend, guided by a simple vision: excellent hairdressing in a welcoming environment.

Today, his greatest achievement isn't necessarily the longevity of the business, but the relationships established along the way.

“To me, Tangles' legacy isn't just about hair. It's about the people, the friendships, the memories, and the sense of family we've created along the way.”

For Raquel Gonzalez, founder of The Blueprint Collective, the focus is on creating opportunities for the next generation.

After 22 years in hairdressing, she's expanding her business from its beginnings with four employees to a space with the capacity to employ 14 people. Having experienced the challenges of working in a commission-based industry, she's determined to build a different kind of workplace.

“For me, success isn't simply about how big my business becomes. It's about how many people I can help grow along the way.”

That entrepreneurial spirit is equally evident at Glam Studio, where owner Saundra Telemaque has built a full-service beauty business with a particular reputation for manicures and pedicures.

From intricate nail art to treatments designed to leave clients feeling refreshed and pampered, she understands that beauty services are about much more than appearances.

“The biggest reward is seeing clients leave happy and confident,” she says.

It's a sentiment shared by Sa'Kazja Wainwright, whose fascination with YouTube make-up tutorials eventually became Saeloise, a beauty brand with ambitions extending well beyond Bermuda.

Over the past decade, her work has taken her into the worlds of editorial photography, commercial productions and international bridal artistry. Having launched her own cosmetics line, she's now looking towards retail expansion and international markets.

“Ultimately, my vision is to build a brand that isn't defined by its geographical location.”

Meanwhile, the growing popularity of aesthetic treatments is introducing another dimension to Bermuda's beauty industry.

Dr Kyjuan H. Brown has witnessed increasing demand for procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers and skin-tightening treatments, alongside greater public awareness of skincare and preventive treatments.

But with that growth, he believes, comes a responsibility to ensure professional standards and patient safety remain paramount.

“The ability to inject a product does not automatically mean someone is qualified to practise aesthetic medicine. Patient safety must come before commercial interests.”

While their businesses and areas of expertise differ, these five professionals share an understanding that success in beauty requires far more than technical skill.

It demands creativity, adaptability, business acumen and the ability to build lasting relationships in a small community where reputation matters.

And as Bermuda's beauty industry continues to change, their stories demonstrate that behind every appointment, treatment and transformation is someone working to build something of their own.

This week, we meet the people behind the business of beauty.
