The big dig has started on Middle Road in Warwick as power firm Belco started trenching up the westbound lane.
The joint project with the Government will allow Belco and other companies to bury cables and pipes.
The major project will extend to Camp Hill at the border with Southampton.
Phase one of the five-phase job will run from the Belco substation by the Belmont golf course west to Longford Hill in Warwick.
