The site of one of the island’s best-known garden and landscaping centres has been put up for sale.

The Property Group real estate firm said the asking price for the Southampton land, the home of Sousa’s Landscape Management, was $850,000.

The company is owned by Jeff Sousa, a former One Bermuda Alliance MP.

Mr Sousa did not respond to requests for comment this week on the reasons for the sale and its implications for the business.

Sousa’s Landscaping, on the corner of Camp Road and Middle Road, remained open.

Both the company and Mr Sousa were named last month in a legal action by the Ministry of Finance over allegations of unpaid taxes.

The writ, filed on December 10, came after the firm was among 17 listed by the Bermuda Health Council last October as having failed to show proof that “the employer had effected, or continued in force, a contract of health insurance”.

Mr Sousa said at the time the company was “feeling the pain of these truly trying times we are all going through”.

He added that health insurance was a top priority and that the company was working to secure additional financing.

The realtor for the property sale said on Tuesday that she was not authorised to provide details.

The realtor’s listing included a total of 1.29 acres of land and a building of 1,300 sq ft.

Part of the land, about 0.25 acres, is zoned as commercial.

The remainder, about one acre, is zoned as agriculture and is used as a plant nursery and for display.
