Staff at power company Belco donated more than 1,000 bags of food and supplies to families in need as part of a Valentine’s Day fundraiser.

Belco’s Valentine’s Day food drive saw the company’s employees spread the love by filling hampers with supplies and distributing them across the island.

Wayne Caines, the president of Belco, said on Friday: “Bermudian families continue to struggle given the ongoing Covid pandemic and our staff wanted to repeat the successful food drive we held last year for Valentine’s Day.

“I’m proud of our team who are committed to our company’s long history of giving back to the community and we look forward to continuing that support going forward.”

The bags were delivered last Sunday.

The Valentine’s Day food drive started last year after Belco staff decided to increase their efforts to help people left struggling in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Staff gave away 700 bags of food last year during the Valentine’s Day weekend.

Krista Barnes, Belco’s director of communications and sustainability, said: “While this initiative falls directly in line with our social sustainability goals, it was not designed for that purpose.

“This initiative is entirely led by employees, born out of their desire to assist the community in a time of identified need.”

Ms Barnes added: “I am personally extremely proud to work for a team that is this generous and this in tune with the needs of the community within which we operate.

“Belco employees have always been actively involved in charitable initiatives and we look forward to continuing our community involvement initiatives throughout 2022.”

Staff have also rallied round to help charities, including Keep Bermuda Beautiful, Meals on Wheels and WindReach, an outdoor centre for the disabled.

Staff also plan to help Habitat for Humanity, set up to provide affordable housing, later this month and the Bermuda Audubon Society next month.
