Cemetery Road closed for demolition work
The clearing of an old generator will close a road near the Belco power plant, the energy company announced today.
Cemetery Road will be partially closed until July 1 as the old power station’s westernmost engine bays are dismantled.
Eco Pest, TreeCon and CNC Automated Carpentry will be accessible through Serpentine Road, while Gorham’s Lumberyard will be reachable through Woodlands Road.
The demolition is part of Belco’s retirement project, which was started in September last year, to dismantle and remove hazardous material and take down buildings no longer in use.
The project is expected to be completed by next March.
Wayne Caines, the president of Belco, said: “We continue to make good progress on our asset retirement project, and while we understand this road closure may be an inconvenience to the public it is necessary to ensure the health and safety of our team and the public which is of the utmost importance.”
He added: “At Belco, we continue to strive to go above and beyond in terms of safety and service to the community.
“Everyone in Bermuda is a stakeholder on this journey and we appreciate your patience, understanding and support as we move forward with our work to meet our goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.”
