Labour Day garbage collection times announced

Residents should put their garbage out one day after their normal collection day next week because of Monday’s Labour Day holiday, the Ministry of Public Works has advised.

The City of Hamilton separately issued a holiday timetable.

For residents island-wide, the week’s schedule for garbage pick-up is to follow a rollover schedule, a spokesman said, with each day’s scheduled collection to take place on the following day. Thus people whose garbage is normally collected on Monday should put it out on Tuesday and so on through Friday, when waste management crews will instead visit on Saturday.

The recycling collection schedule will not be affected. For the West End, recycling will be collected on Thursday, while East End recyclables will be picked up on Friday.

The Tynes Bay public drop-off is open during the Labour Day holiday from 9am until noon.

The service is free to drivers of private cars — along with light vans or trucks, and light private trucks.

Recyclables and other items are also accepted.

In Hamilton, the Corporation advised that only businesses, bars and restaurants will have garbage collected during the Labour Day holiday on Monday.

Normal collection will resume on Tuesday.

Garbage should be placed at sidewalks or in designated collection areas by the times indicated in the refuse collection schedule.

Waste should not be put out for collection outside of the scheduled days.
