New date set for annual Peppercorn Ceremony

An annual event full of “pomp and pageantry” will take place next month after it was postponed earlier this year.

The Peppercorn Ceremony will be held on King’s Square in the Town of St George on October 12.

It was planned for last April but was pushed back after Rena Lalgie, the Governor, was a close contact of someone who tested positive for Covid-19.

A government spokeswoman said today: “The public are invited to attend the annual ceremony to enjoy the tradition, pomp and pageantry featuring the Royal Bermuda Regiment guard on parade and the Regiment Band and Corps of Drums.”

The annual Peppercorn Ceremony event sees the Freemasons of St George handing over a peppercorn rent for use of the State House, where the House of Assembly first sat permanently until the capital moved to Hamilton.

The spokeswoman said: “Invited guests are advised that the original invitations will be honoured, as no new invitations will be issued.”

She added that people with invitations should confirm their attendance with the Corporation of St George by October 5, either by calling 297-1532 or e-mailing cmaxwell@stgeorge.bm.
