Work has started on installing new playground equipment after the original structure was burnt down in an arson attack.

The work at Pig’s Field in Pembroke, where arsonists struck in April last year, brought together staff at Horsefield Landscape and Design as well as volunteers from community group, the Pig’s Field Family Connection.

Rhydell Paynter, president of the group’s executive committee, said while working at the site yesterday that the ground had been dug out and prepared, the playground equipment had been erected and concrete footings were being placed.

He said: “Work started last week and we are doing well. It is excellent, it’s been a long time coming. We had some minor set backs along the way but we are plugging ahead and we are doing well.

“It’s very satisfying – when we get everything in we will have an official opening and have the kids here. We will give more information when that happens. We will have a really big event.”

While the installation of the playground is almost complete, phase two of the Pig’s Field project will include security fencing, cameras and lighting. The entire project was budgeted for $125,000 and $30,000 still needs to be raised.

Mr Paynter added: “This has been a community effort and people have contributed in various ways and helped to us to get where we are.”

Those wishing to donate to the Pig’s Field Family Connection charitable cause can deposit funds into Clarien Bank using the following details:
