A revamped basketball court for Pembroke Community Club was reopened by David Burt with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today.

The court, behind the Casa dos Acores Community Centre, has fresh basketball backboards, hoops and rims.

The job was taken up by the Department of Youth Sport and Recreation, at the behest of Owen Darrell, Minister of Youth, Sport and Recreation.

Mr Darrell said area residents, including Tiras and Sar Smith, who played on the court with other neighbourhood children, had highlighted the disrepair.

The department secured Executive Iron Works, Bermuda Sign Printers and International Sports Shop for the job.

Mr Darrell said the courts were now “functional, safe and available to anyone wanting to play basketball”.

He thanked K. Charryse Bean, director of the Department of Youth Sport and Recreation, with department property manager Freddie Evans and the Department of Parks.

Also at today’s ceremony was area MP Jaché Adams.

Middle schoolchildren attending the eastern, central, and western government community centre winter camps joined in a basketball tournament at the centre, trying out the new equipment in a short game with Mr Adams.
