The Human Rights Commission wants to hear from residents as it works to combat discrimination in housing.

A spokeswoman said the HRC is in the process of preparing policy recommendations to the Government on the subject and hopes the public will take part in a survey as part of their consultative process.

Lisa Reed, HRC’s executive officer, said: “We want to hear from anyone who has experienced or is currently experiencing discrimination or harassment in their quest for somewhere to live.

“According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, more than 1.8 billion people worldwide lack adequate housing and discrimination in housing is one of the most pervasive and persistent barriers to the fulfilment of the right to adequate housing today.”

“The Bermuda Human Rights Commission notes that housing provides stability, dignity, and security for an individual or family. We believe housing is a human right.”

Ms Reed added that inadequate housing can impact a person’s health, work, education and relationships, causing a diminished quality of life.

“Failing to recognise, protect and fulfil the right to adequate housing results in the violation of fundamental rights which includes the right to work, education, health and security.

“We look forward to hearing from as many people as possible. The HRC is committed to ensuring everyone who wants to complete the survey can do so.”

The survey can be filled out online at the HRC website, by visiting the HRC office at 32 Victoria Street or by phone at 295-5859.

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on April 7.

Ms Reed said: “Let us know if you, or someone you know, needs help to complete the survey.

“The responses we receive will help us to develop the policy recommendations, therefore we want to ensure that as many perspectives as possible are represented.

“Questionnaire submissions will be anonymous. Our recommendations to the government will not reveal or disclose personal information or sensitive personal information.”
